These tartan plaid looks epitomize the modern prep style that’s taking center stage in fashion this fall. Reminiscent of a boy’s club, prep-school uniform, but made feminine and stylish with the right accessories and designer touches. Pencil skirts, slim-cut suits, and cigarette pants in rich, deep blues and burgundies are a few of my favorites.

How to wear this look to the office:
For more conservative offices stick to wearing just one plaid piece at a time. Blazers, pencil skirts or slim pants in a darker subtle wool plaid will give you a sleek look. Pair your plaids with a solid round crew neck sweater or white button down and heels.
For offices with less rules, be bold and wear a full suit in plaid, making sure the cut is current like an ankle or cigarette pant. A tailored fit is key here to avoid looking like you’re wearing your grandpa’s suit! I also love a round midi skirt or kilt with a lace-up heel or high mule to give an edgier, stylish look. Accessorize with chunky gold necklaces or bracelets.
On the weekend:
So many options! Tartan blazers look amazing with jeans or leather pants. Plaid skirts or pants with solid tees. Here you have complete freedom to express your personal style with this fresh, modern prep trend for fall so have fun with it!

Meet Aparna Saraf, ambitious attorney and busy bride-to-be whose sophisticated style and unyielding drive for success has been a constant inspiration to HEM. We had the privilege of making a custom jacket for Aparna this Spring, which she models above in her downtown Tribeca neighborhood. Read on for more details on our made-to-measure process and for an interview with our very first HEM Muse!
After meeting in our showroom to select the perfect piece, Aparna decided on the tuxedo jacket as she can easily take it from work to evening. We scheduled a fitting with our master tailor where we took her measurements and she selected her fabric, lining, and fit preferences.
Then we got to work, creating a pattern exclusively for her. Two weeks later, the basted fitting was complete and Aparna returned for her second fitting. We made some minor adjustments to the shoulders, the most important part of any jacket. One week later, the jacket was finished and fit her like a glove. We had so much fun working with Aparna, and are so honored to hear that her HEM jacket has become a favorite for the office, and for date nights out with her fiance, Omar.
Here Aparna shares with us her career advice, style tips, and more.
To be truly successful in business women need to….
"Constantly assess where they want to be in the next five to ten years. If you think that your current position won’t take you there, then you need to look for other opportunities with more upward potential. It can be easy to become complacent in a job that does not seem to be advancing. I don’t think anyone is ever truly successful in business without taking some degree of risk."
Daily must-visit websites and reads:
"I love to read the HEM blog for style tips and career inspiration. I always read certain sections of the Wall Street Journal, NY Times, various daily publications for the asset management industry, and my guilty pleasure, Page Six."
My go-to look for the office:
"When the weather is hot, I wear dresses - shift dresses and wraps and keep a couple of versatile blazers in my office for any unexpected meetings."
My go-to look for a night out:
"Jeans, 5 inch heels, an embellished top, and my HEM tuxedo jacket."
My favorite colors for the office:
"Navy and black because they are easy to accessorize and hide coffee spills well! I also love to wear white, light grey, and throw in splashes of color with a light blouse under a suit, a patterned scarf, a colorful handbag, or a chunky necklace."
My favorite travel destinations:
"Istanbul, Amalfi Coast, Mumbai"
Favorite spot in the city:
"The Gardens at St. Luke in the Fields is the most beautiful and peaceful oasis in the West Village. In the spring when the flowers are in bloom, it’s my favorite spot to sit, sip coffee, and read a good book. A huge plus is that cell phones are prohibited.”
The best style advice I’ve ever received:
"Focus less on quantity, more on quality. I have a few pieces that I splurged on that I tend to wear a lot, and I find that they last for years and instantly make me feel more put together."

I have to admit, I was skeptical when I first saw double-breasted jackets popping up on designer runways for spring and fall. But seeing this strong-shouldered, tailored jacket paired with worn-in jeans, shorts, or leather really won me over. I love the balance the two extremes bring. Polished and put-together with an edgier twist. Kate Moss looks incredible in that bright blue with frayed jeans - so effortless and so chic.

Blue oxford shirts are one of my favorite trends this spring. The classic button-down is a menswear-inspired look that is crisp, cool, and easy to dress up or down. Pair with a pencil skirt or cigarette pant for the office or white jeans or shorts on the weekends. Perfect with tailored jackets for meetings - it’s timeless, chic, and simple. Try J.Crew’s stretch perfect fit.

Happy Birthday! Actress, mother, style icon, and humanitarian Audrey Hepburn would have turned 85 today. Such a beauty, and the personification of timeless elegance.
My beautiful muse Aparna Saraf in our Italian wool tuxedo jacket. Stay tuned for a full profile on her and how we created her first HEM jacket.
Since today is the very first day of Spring, I thought it fitting to share my favorite trend of the season - pleated skirts! I love them in pastel shades like blue and pink and the basic black and white too. They transition easily from the office to an evening out and are so comfortable and effortless for the weekends. For a polished look, wear them with a collared button down or sweater to work. When off-duty, pair them with a tee-shirt and sandals. You can’t go wrong. And I’m loving Ann Taylor’s knit version for just under $100.

I love the simplicity of black and white in fashion and home decor. It has the rare ability to look timeless yet modern.
“Women think of all colors except the absence of color. I have said that black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.”
